Five Card Stud Rules PDF Print E-mail
The Rules to the Game of Five Card Stud

Five-card stud is one of the oldest poker games, but
has become less popular with the surge of Texas
Holdem.  It is no longer an event in the World Series
of Poker, but can still be found in some Internet
poker rooms.

There are a number of variations of 5-card stud.  For
example, In home games it is common to play with wild
cards, which can be used to represent any desired
card.  On the Internet and in more serious games, wild
cards are not included.  There are also differences in
which cards are face-up and which are not.  The rules
below are for Internet 5-card stud, which is the most
official and standard form of the game.

To begin the game players are dealt two cards, one
face down and one face up.  Then the betting round
begins.  After betting the players are dealt a third
card face up and there is another betting round.  This
pattern continues until the players have 5 cards in
total.

The players then have a final showdown with their five
cards.  The player who is called is the first to show
their cards, similar to all poker games.  The hand
rankings are also the same as all other poker games.

In stud games there is no button and the cards are
dealt to the player to the left of the dealer.  The
button is not necessary because there are no blinds
like in Texas Holdem.

Betting Variations

The Ante
The ante is a forced bet for all players before the
cards are dealt.  The idea is to build the pot so that
players have some initiative to stay in and bet more.
It also acts as the blinds do in Holdem so that
players can’t play for free and wait for the best
cards.

Normally in stud games the player with the highest
card face up begins the betting.  The betting
continues to that player’s left.  As the player’s
cards change the highest ranking hand showing starts
the betting each round.  Similar to all other poker
games, the betting moves clockwise.

The Bring-in
A bring-in is a common betting method in stud games.
This is similar to an ante, but is only provided by
one player instead of everyone.  The bring-in comes
from the player with the lowest face-up card. (The
person closest to the left of the dealer if there are
two players with the low card)   The bring-in is
normally half the small bet at the table.  It is the
opening bet and players then call, raise, or fold.  In
the next round the player with the highest ranking
hand showing starts by checking or betting.

Limits
5-card stud is most commonly played with limits,
although no-limit does exist.  The limits normally
work the same as other limit poker games and increase
in the later rounds.

The rules above are the most standardized form of the
game.  As mentioned, variations do exist.  However,
understanding these general rules will allow you to
play 5-card stud.
