The Importance of Position when playing No-Limit Texas Hold'em PDF Print E-mail

Depending on where you are sitting relative to the dealer should make a big difference in the way you play your cards. In a ten handed game the first 5 players left of the dealer (small blind, big blind and next 3 players) are sitting in early position. The next 3 players are in middle position and the last two players are in late position. Pre-flop the worst position is the 3rd player to the left of the dealer (under the gun) because he is the first to act with the least amount of information since none of the other players have even had to call yet. The weakest position after the flop is the small blind. If you are a tight player the cards to play when you are in early position include pairs 10's to AA's, AK, AQs, KQs. Middle position can add these 9-9, 8-8, A-Js, A-Ts, Q-Js, A-Q, K-Q hands and late position can A-anything suited, K-Ts, Q-Ts, J-Ts and any pair. Of course deciding to play a hand depends as well on how the player ahead of you bets. If everyone is limping in (just calling the blind) then you can perhaps value your hand a little more, unless someone is slow playing a big pair and you never know what the blinds have until they bet last.

Most players these days have figured out how to play their cards when they are in the cutoff (1 to the right of the dealer) or on the button (you are the dealer) and everyone has folded around to you. Unless you have complete junk you can bet at least double the big blind and most of the time you will win the blinds. So those two seats often take the pot with a little push at the end.
