Beginner Betting Tactics E-mail
Every player should carefully consider his or her initial pre flop bet. With that being said, any raises that follow should also be scrutinized as raising too little or too much might give your opponents some indication of the strength of your hand.
The intention is to make your opponents’ job as difficult as possible in reading you based upon your betting strategy. Raising big from the early position will indicate a strong hand and cause your opponents to play to that hand. The key here is to make the other players feel like they have a difficult choice to either call or fold. This puts the pressure on them to consider their hands more seriously and the decision here for some will be to fold. Raising from the later positions also has its benefits. It can signal to your opponents that you have a hand that you are willing to take to the end. Even with less than stellar hands, this tactic has good strategic merit. By pressuring opponents to fold sooner than call, you reduce the number of players that will see the river, increasing your odds of taking the pot.

Effective betting is challenging in the early stages, as you do not want to raise too much causing everyone to feel the need to let the pot go and fold. The key is to have a plan for your raises, some experts suggest using a guide of two or three times the big blind as a rule of thumb. Even if the temptation is there to raise higher with a strong hand it is more prudent to manage the emotional aspect of your game and keep your bets controlled and in so doing not revealing too much too soon.
